The gut and skin share developmental and functional connections maintained throughout life through these immune pathways, the nervous system, and the bloodstream.
What Training Does to the Gut-Skin Axis
A 2025 peer-reviewed paper published in Premier Science (Training, Cleansing, and the Cutaneous Microbiome: Implications for Athlete Skin Health) directly addressed the athlete context. The review found that excessive training can disrupt gut microbial balance, elevating circulating cytokines that may exacerbate skin inflammation and delay barrier repair, noting parallels with over-training syndrome as evidence of a gut-skin axis in athletic populations. It further confirmed that dysbiosis following repeated pH shifts or lipid stripping from training reduces antimicrobial peptide output and compromises local immune defences, increasing infection risk and prolonging recovery intervals.
Moderate exercise supports gut microbiome diversity and a healthy immune response. High training loads without adequate recovery, nutrition, and sleep can temporarily compromise gut barrier integrity. When this occurs, bacterial compounds crossing into the bloodstream can trigger systemic immune activation with downstream effects on the skin. The Practical Picture
The gut-skin axis is not a reason to overhaul your entire approach to training and nutrition. It is a reason to ensure that gut health is part of the recovery picture alongside sleep, nutrition, and training load management. For athletes who already eat well, train systematically, and recover intelligently, adding awareness of the gut-skin connection fills in a gap that most fitness-focused people have never considered.
