A cut is one of the most demanding things you can put your body through. Training volume stays high. Calorie intake drops. The body prioritises fuel for essential functions and starts rationing resources. And your skin is rarely at the top of the priority list.
If you have been through a cut before, you have probably noticed what happens to your skin. Dryness that did not exist during the bulk. A dullness that sets in a few weeks into the deficit. Skin that looks less full and less vibrant than it did at maintenance calories. This is not coincidence. It is physiology.

What a Calorie Deficit Does to the Skin
When calorie intake drops below maintenance, the body enters a resource allocation mode. Energy is directed toward the functions the body considers essential: organ function, hormonal regulation, immune response, muscle preservation under training stimulus. Skin maintenance is a lower priority in this hierarchy.
The first visible consequence is typically reduced sebum production. Sebum is the skin's natural oil, produced by sebaceous glands, and it plays a direct role in maintaining the lipid barrier that keeps moisture in. When dietary fat intake drops during a cut, sebum production often follows. The result is a drier, less supple skin barrier that is more susceptible to transepidermal water loss.
Does your skin feel noticeably drier and tighter a few weeks into a cut even when your hydration is adequate? That is reduced sebum production and lipid barrier compromise, not dehydration. Drinking more water will not fix it.
Protein, Skin, and the Competition for Amino Acids
During a cut, protein intake relative to body weight typically increases to preserve lean mass. But the total amino acid pool available to all tissues is still constrained by overall calorie intake. The skin competes with muscle tissue, connective tissue, and immune function for the available amino acids needed for structural maintenance and barrier renewal.
In a well-designed cut, muscle tissue wins this competition because of the training stimulus maintaining the demand signal. Skin maintenance, which does not have an equivalent training stimulus to prioritise it, often loses out. Over a cut of several weeks or months, this shows up as skin that becomes progressively drier, less elastic, and slower to recover between sessions.
Athletes who support their skin topically with protein-derived ingredients during a cut are effectively supplementing the amino acid supply to the skin directly, bypassing the systemic competition for dietary protein. Fermented rice protein and pea peptides applied topically after training provide the skin with the structural inputs it is not receiving in adequate quantities from the systemic pool during caloric restriction.
The Hormonal Dimension
Extended calorie deficits affect hormonal function in ways that have downstream consequences for skin. Reduced leptin and thyroid hormone activity during prolonged cuts slow cellular turnover across all tissues including the skin. Cortisol, which typically rises during periods of caloric restriction and high training volume, has a direct effect on the skin's barrier integrity and its ability to retain moisture.
This is why skin that looks acceptable in the first few weeks of a cut often deteriorates noticeably in weeks six, eight, and beyond. The hormonal consequences of prolonged caloric restriction compound on the direct nutritional consequences to produce a more significant effect than either would in isolation.
What to Do About It
The dietary interventions are straightforward. Keep dietary fat intake above the minimum threshold for hormonal function, typically at least 20 percent of total calories. Prioritise omega-3 rich fats that directly support the skin's lipid barrier. Do not cut dietary fat so aggressively that sebum production drops significantly.
The topical intervention is equally straightforward and arguably more impactful during a cut because the systemic supply of skin-supportive nutrients is constrained. Apply a moisturiser containing lipid-replenishing ingredients like shea butter and cocoa butter and protein-derived ingredients like fermented rice protein and pea peptides within two to three minutes of every post-training shower. This window is when skin permeability is highest and the topical inputs can do the most work.
Consistency matters more during a cut than at any other phase. Your skin is under more resource pressure during caloric restriction than during a bulk or maintenance phase. The post-session topical recovery step is not optional when you are cutting. It is the mechanism by which you give your skin what the deficit is withholding from it.
