Kakadu Plum vs Synthetic Vitamin C: Why the Source Actually Matters for Active Skin

Vitamin C is one of the most well-researched ingredients in skincare. For athletes whose skin is under repeated mechanical and oxidative stress, this dimension of Vitamin C has direct practical relevance.

Peer-reviewed research published in PMC (2025) confirms that ellagic acid helps counteract oxidative stress, supports the preservation of collagen and elastin, and protects skin against photoaging. Gallic acid carries documented antioxidant and antimicrobial properties at the skin surface. Neither of these compounds exists in synthetic ascorbic acid because they are part of the plant, not the isolated molecule. The natural matrix also provides inherent pH compatibility and stability, removing the need for the acidic stabilisers that make synthetic Vitamin C formulations problematic for sensitised and training-stressed skin.

Kakadu Plum is more expensive to source and extract than synthetic ascorbic acid. Dermogains costs more to formulate as a result. Kakadu Plum is endemic to Australia, wild-harvested from native trees primarily in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, and has been used by Indigenous Australian communities for thousands of years. Which Is Better?

Both have merit and the comparison is not straightforward. Synthetic ascorbic acid at high concentrations in a well-stabilised formulation has strong clinical evidence behind it.
